Key Issues

  • The need for skills in environmental sustainability is not well recognised - seen as a by-product of lean manufacturing.
  • There needs to be more demand for training in environmental sustainability.
  • Environmental sustainability skills training needs to be available to all business regardless of size;
  • The reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy place greater emphasis on environmental best practice, and related skills
    - eg Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive requires IPM skills.
  • New technology, and associated skills, will be required for greater food production whilst maintaining levels of biodiversity.
  • Business needs to see postive role they can play in managing food supply systems to mitigate climate change.
